Reuben stoked to make surf squad

Young Kaiko¯ ura surfer Reuben Lyons is heading in the right direction in his pursuit to reach the top of his game after being selected for the Canterbury Scholastic Surf Team’s winter training squad. Selection was based on individuals’ surfing ability, attitude, attendance, teamwork and coachability, and the weekly training, which kicked off this week, will involve a variety of land and water based training, as well as the odd weekend day workshop. Reuben, 14, said he was thrilled to have made the squad. ‘‘I’m really stoked about being picked and really stoked to get to go to Christchurch every week for coaching,’’ he said. Having been surfing since the age of seven, and competing since he was 10, Reuben already has a wealth of surfing and competition experience. This is enormously helped by the fact he lives a stone’s throw away from Kaiko¯ura’s prime surf breaks, and the fact his dad runs the local surf school. ‘‘My dad definitely inspires me,’’ he said. ‘‘And my favourite pro surfers are Jordy Smith and Kelly Slater.’’ Feedback will be given to surfers individually during the winter training by the coaches so that they know how they are progressing and what to keep working on in preparation for team selection. Reuben will now be working flat out to impress the coaches ahead of the team being selected at the start of August. If successful he will continue to train as well as being expected to undertake some fundraising. ‘‘I just want to be able to surf the best I can and represent Kaiko¯ura and surf pumping waves in Indo.’’
