Vehicles and parking
Matt Lawrey cutting up his Nelson City councillor’s parking pass ( Nelson Mail, September 14) is a timely example to other councillors. Nelsust has asked councillors and council staff in the past to use public and active transport, so they can see how inadequate it is. Previously, councillors have resisted, but we would urge them to follow Lawrey’s example. Mode shift is supposedly one of the central tenets of this council. Councillors’ actions should reflect this, and they should be setting an example for the rest of the community.
We currently have 44 per cent of the area inside the CBD ring roads devoted to cars and car parking. Talent does not come or stay in a place because it has good parking, and the places we find most attractive are those that aren’t cardominated. The very time when Nelson is at its best, on Saturday mornings, half of our main parking square is unavailable for parking. Peter Olorenshaw Convenor, NELSUST
