Surf tower victim of sea power
LAWRENCE GULLERY
RAGLAN surf life savers have had to make an early rescue – saving their club tower from collapsing into eroding sands.
The Waikato club’s tower is just 11 years old but on Tuesday it will be lifted out of Nga¯ runui Beach after waves rolling in from the Tasman Sea eroded sand back to the rock base.
Despite the setback, the club is adamant the popular beach will be open for the new season which starts on Labour Weekend, October 25.
Oceanography specialist Professor Karin Bryan says the plight of the tower is a red flag for the coastal property market. Prices could fall quickly over the next 20 years.
