KIA
Related to both the Hyundai Ioniq and Kona, but with more in common with the former, Kia’s Niro represents a solid and superbly comfortable option. It is almost “un-EV-like” in its conservative looks that don’t shout that it is anything special, but underneath lies a strong performer with an impressive range. Like the Hyundai Kona, top-spec models also feature above the $80k cutoff.

MAZDA
With its first EV, Mazda has gone down the quality-over-quantity route and made the MX-30 a small SUV (surprise!) that also packs a smaller range compared with other EVs around the same price.
It’s all to do with the whole ‘‘well to wheel’’ concept that Mazda builds its cars in line with – the bigger the
battery, the higher the carbon emissions involved in building it are. Still, small range/big price aside, the MX-30 is a massively high-quality offering that is a blast to drive.
Mazda MX-30 Takami

MG
MG’s sole EV offering (so far) is the small ZS SUV that also happens to be the cheapest brand-new EV available in the country. It offers a compelling package for the money as well, with impressive build quality and high levels of standard equipment.
There are a few rough edges, but at just over $40k after the Clean Car rebate is applied, it is a winner.
MG ZS EV
Price: $48,990 ($40,365 after rebate) WLTP range: 263km
