Survivors of North Korea’s ‘paradise on earth’ sue Kim

Elderly survivors of the North Korean regime are suing Kim Jong-un for damages in a Japanese court after being deceived into moving there by promises of a ‘‘paradise on earth’’. Even if they win their case, the five have no realistic hope of receiving the 100 million yen (NZ$1.2 million) compensation they are demanding from Pyongyang or of seeing Kim obey the court’s summons to appear as a witness. Instead, they hope to draw attention to a forgotten injustice of the postwar era that still divides families today. Some 93,000 people emigrated from Japan to North Korea between 1959 and 1984 under the paradise on earth scheme.
