Arguments about what to call this country and how bilingual to make it seem, at the moment as always, spurious political wrangling. Frankly, noone is going to care what language is printed on a rubbish bin if they've got to forage in it for food.

Virginia Fallon (Sept 23) suggests a referendum to change (or not) our country's name to Aotearoa, Land of the Long White Cloud, a beautiful and fitting name. What shall we call ourselves, however? Aotearoans? New Zealanders, so both names are preserved? Kiwis? On Thursday, at the 1pm briefing, the prime minister said, ‘‘It isn't the Aotearoa way to leave anybody behind.'' Sounds good.
