Dollar for dollar

In reference to SM McNeill’s letter (Sept 24) regarding the NZTA model, water reforms and my statements, that is exactly the point. If ensuring all of New Zealand complies with the new water standards is a government initiative then there is no reason why it wouldn’t match our city’s contribution through a dollar for dollar funding model, in contrast to the proposed asset grab.

It would be more efficient, more transparent and ensure that when residents have concerns they won’t be calling an 0800 number in another province.

Local ownership means you can hold people like my colleagues and me accountable, and if you don’t like what we do, you can vote us out.

The Government needs to honour its previous commitment of allowing the public to have a say, and for councils to have the ability to opt out of these reforms.

Sam MacDonald, Waimairi Ward City Councillor
