Equal treatment

Climate change is here. Extreme weather events now worldwide require strong governmental leadership. It can provide the financial support that sciencebased solutions need to ease the impacts of such change on our people and our environments, locally and nationally.

Parochial council-based environmental decisions are now inadequate. We have far too many councils in New Zealand, resulting in varying environmental standards.

Self-interest from vested groups and political hijacking throughout the country have led to excessive applications of artificial fertilisers, and nitrates and other pollutants have invaded our subterranean acquifers, and polluted our rivers, streams and lakes.

Our Ma¯ ori people at last are being recognised for the expertise they have long possessed on environmental matters.

The divisive council-based approach simply has not worked. Three Waters reforms will ensure that all people will be treated equally, ensuring their rights to safe water and safe environments. Phil Davison, Rangiora
