Wool masks for athletes, astronauts

New Zealand’s Olympic team is wearing facemasks that use the same technology that will be used to protect Nasa astronauts. The team’s masks, made by Auckland company Lanaco, have wool-based filters. The athletes have a mix of certified topline respirators for high-risk use and resistance masks for non-competitive times. Olympian trampolinist Dylan Schmidt said he was comfortable with the mask. ‘‘It has actually been pretty easy to get used to wearing a facemask all the time and I love the look of them.’’ NZ Olympic Committee chief executive Kereyn Smith was pleased to have the wool-fibre masks. ‘‘Lanaco is a fantastic New Zealand company creating world-leading technology, which is helping to keep our team safe.’’ Lanaco provided 70,000 reusable, bio-degradable and disposable facemasks for the team. The mask is to be used by the crew going to the Moon in Nasa’s Orion in 2023.
