Boy racers

Bob Cullinane, Hamilton

I would like to reply to J Dekker’s ‘‘Boy racers’’ (Waikato Times letters to the editor, July 17). The Hamilton Car Club (HCC) addressed this very same issue many years ago. We invited Leo Tooman, David Bennett and several more highprofile people to attend an afternoon at the HCC, which included some driving demonstrations.

The objective was to encourage these ‘‘boy racers’’ to join a car club and demonstrate some skills behind the wheel. We even offered driver tuition.

The short answer to all of this was that the boy racers don’t want to align themselves with a club, they don’t want to be seen as substandard drivers (as most are) and driving illegally is where they get their thrills.

No matter where you put a concrete skid pad (unless it’s by the Desert Road) they will annoy someone.

The answer is with the Traffic Enforcement Division of the NZ Police. Get hard with penalties!!!.
