Brilliant Biles – and she’s only warming up

Gymnastics

Simone Biles once again nailed a jaw-dropping vault no other woman has ever performed during a practice run at the Tokyo Olympics.

The US gold medallist gymnast gave fans a teaser yesterday of what’s to come for her events by sharing a video of herself performing a Yurchenko double pike during podium training.

The move consists of roundoff onto the springboard, followed by a back handspring onto the vault.

The vault has only ever been performed by men, until Biles came along. The 24-year-old made history when she landed the move at the US Classic in May.

Once the video of her Olympics made the rounds on social media, Biles retweeted one of her fans’ posts.

‘‘IOC said no spectators. So @Simone_Biles said I’ll just bring my own biles family….yurchenko double pike, double double off beam, triple double and double lay half on floor,’’ the fan said.

With a combined total of 30 Olympic and world medals, Biles is the most-decorated US women’s gymnast ever.

She has been locked in for Tokyo from the moment she returned to training in late 2017.

She will be competing in the women’s qualifying round tomorrow, starting from 1pm, with the all-round final on Thursday at 10.50pm. There are also further events she will be competing in from August 1-3.
