Star of the track sets new pace on catwalk

A German runner dubbed the world’s sexiest athlete has swapped the track for the catwalk at Milan Fashion Week. Alica Schmidt, 22, was left out of the women’s 4x400m relay team at the Tokyo Games but amassed nearly 2.4 million followers on Instagram with a stream of artfully posed photographs. Now she has won a contract for her first modelling appearance for Hugo Boss. ‘‘I have absolutely no catwalk experience so I’m very excited to see how I’ll deal with it,’’ she said. ‘‘Thanks to my training I have the [requisite] capabilities.’’ Schmidt, who grew up in the Bavarian city of Ingolstadt, came to prominence at the 2017 European junior athletics championships, where she won a silver medal with the German 4x400m relay squad. Shortly afterwards an American sports blog named her the ‘‘hottest athlete in the world’’. Several tabloid newspapers followed suit.
