Wedding postponed after stag party visit

AWest Coast couple have postponed their wedding after the groom and his stag party came into close contact with a person who had Covid-19.

The man and his friends travelled to Nelson at the weekend.

But by Wednesday they were notified they were close contacts of a Covid case, forcing them to self-isolate for up to 10 days.

The bride-to-be declined to comment but in a message to guests, seen by Stuff, she said the choice to postpone had been ‘‘taken out of our hands’’ and they were ‘‘heartbroken’’ to have to make the decision. As of 1pm yesterday, 14 people in Nelson had tested positive for Covid-19. There are 23 locations of interest in the area.

Among them is Secrets Gentlemen’s Club, a brothel and strip club, which is now closed. Those linked to it are isolating for 10 days, its owner says.

Hardy’s Bar & TAB in Nelson was also visited by a Covid case on Sunday, between 4pm and 4.15pm.

Other locations of interest in Nelson added on Wednesday include Two Dollar Things on Hardy St, Rattle n Hum Bar, and Z service station on Rutherford St.

A stag do is thought to have visited the strip club but it is unclear whether it is the group linked to the postponed wedding.

Secrets Gentlemen’s Club is the third adult entertainment business in the country to become a Covid19 location of interest.

The Ministry of Health is asking anyone who visited the club between 5.30pm on Saturday and 3am on Sunday to self-isolate and get tested immediately.

Close contacts are also advised to get a test on day five.

The West Coast District Health Board was unable to confirm the number of people self-isolating at home in the area, as public health authorities may not know about close contacts in a region if they are being managed by a separate public health unit, a spokeswoman said.

The West Coast has had no Covid-19 cases since April 2020.

Buller mayor Jamie Cleine said he had not had official confirmation of anyone isolating on the West Coast but it was only a matter of time before a positive case was confirmed.

‘‘It’s coming to our community and someone will be first. The important thing is we don’t play the blame game because someone has been to Nelson for the weekend that somehow makes them bad,’’ he said.

‘‘The locations of interest are places like supermarkets and service stations – places that anyone could go and bring it back. I’m expecting to get a call any day now that we have a case and it could be anybody.

‘‘There are a lot of interactions between our district and Nelson. ‘‘
