Kiwis make ‘Forbes 30 under 30’

Four New Zealanders have been named among the prestigious Forbes 30 under 30 Asia list for social impact, recognising influential young leaders, advocates and entrepreneurs across the globe.

Shaneel Lal, founder of Conversion Therapy Action Group, Emily Au-Young, co-founder of Reemi, and Genevieve Mora and Jazz Thornton, co-founders of Voices of Hope are among the selected – listed under the social impact category.

There were more than 4000 nominees for the 2022 list, and 22 countries are represented.

Thornton, 26, is a finalist on New Zealand show Dancing With The Stars, but is competing based on her legacy of overcoming mental illness and starting a nonprofit digital campaign with Mora on the issue.

Voices of Hope started in 2014, raising awareness through personal experiences including the ‘‘Unite Against Loneliness’’ campaign, addressing a surge of aloneness during the pandemic.

Thornton has also received a Commonwealth Points of Light for her advocacy work, according to Forbes.

Emily Au-Young has been listed due to her work on reusable period products, made with natural fibre that also self-disinfects.

Au-Young founded New Zealandbased social media enterprise Reemi in 2019, and it raised $49,100 when it first launched after more than 400 backpackers donated.

A year later, Reemi received funding from a British human rights group, and teamed up with the University of Munich for research into menstrual health management.

Shaneel Lal gained notoriety through spearheading the campaign that led to New Zealand banning conversion therapy earlier this year.

Lal grew up in Fiji, but founded Conversion Therapy Action Group after moving to New Zealand as a teenager.

Last year, the campaign’s petition reached over 150,000 signatures, responding to a bill that would make the treatment illegal.
