Williamson in top IPL price bracket

Black Caps captain Kane Williamson has set a nearly $400,000 base price as he and several teammates chase a return to the

Indian Premier League at the December 23 player auction.

Williamson, allrounder Jimmy Neesham and fast bowler Adam Milne were listed among 21 internationals at the top price bracket of 2 crore rupees (NZ$387,000), along with England skipper Ben Stokes.

Seven other Black Caps are listed at a base price of 1 crore (NZ$194,000): Michael Bracewell, Mark Chapman, Martin Guptill, Kyle Jamieson, Matt Henry, Tom Latham and Daryl Mitchell.

Williamson was cut by his franchise Sunrisers Hyderabad in November after eight years with them. He captained the Sunrisers in this year’s competition where they finished eighth, having been retained for 14 crore (NZ$2.71 million).

Williamson, Mitchell, Neesham, Milne and Tim Seifert were all released by their respective sides last month while seven Black Caps were retained: Tim Southee, Trent Boult, Lockie Ferguson, Mitchell Santner, Devon Conway, Finn Allen and Glenn Phillips.

The New Zealand captain, who will lead the side to Pakistan later this month for tests and ODIs, reiterated his desire to continue

playing all three formats for the Black Caps despite his struggles for form and strike rate this year.

His run of questionable innings in cricket’s shortest format continued in the second T20 against India at Bay Oval, Mount Maunganui, where he made 61 off 52 balls as the Black Caps were dismissed for 125 while chasing 192 to win.

He backed that up with a knock of 94 not out off 98 balls, in a remarkable unbroken

stand of 221 with Tom Latham as the Black Caps beat India by seven wickets in the second ODI at Eden Park.

A maximum of 87 players can be bought at the ‘mini auction’ in Kochi, of which 30 can be overseas names.

A total of 991 players (714 Indian and 277 overseas) are part of the initial long list which the IPL shared with the 10 franchises on Thursday. The IPL will prune this down based on input from the franchises, who have until December 9 to get back to the tournament authorities.
