What to watch this week

– James Croot

Heels (December 6, TVNZ OnDemand) Stephen Amell and Alexander Ludwig play siblings and ring-rivals in this eight-part wrestling drama which sees brothers Jack and Ace Spade pitted against one another, while vying for national attention. Inside the ropes, somebody must play the good guy, and somebody must play their nemesis, the heel. But in the real world, those characters can be hard to live up to – or leave behind. ‘‘Heels is built for endurance, not for speed, and it wouldn’t come as a surprise if, in another two seasons, it starts popping up in ‘TV’s best drama’ conversations,’’ wrote Variety’s Joshua Alston.

Welcome to Earth (December 8, Disney+) One Strange Rock duo Will Smith and Darren Aronofsky reunite for this six-part series which sees the former embarking on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure to explore our planet’s greatest wonders and reveal its hidden secrets. Guided by elite explorers, he gets up close and personal with thrilling spectacles that include volcanoes that roar in silence and animal swarms that appear to have a mind of their own.

And Just Like That (December 10, Neon/SkyGo)

Almost 18 years after the original Sex and the City ended and aiming to wipe away the awful memories of the 2010 movie sequel, Carrie Bradshaw (Sarah Jessica Parker), Miranda Hobbs (Cynthia Nixon) and Charlotte York (Kristin Davis) are back in this 10-episode revival. Promising to feature many of the fan-favourite supporting characters, it will see the main trio exploring the reality of life in your 50s.
