Have whistle will travel

A brief encounter between the Manawatu¯ Standard’s Peter Lampp and women’s rugby phenomenon Selica Winiata last weekend highlighted the jet-setting lifestyle of some athletes. Selica revealed to the sports scribe that she was off to referee the sevens in Toulouse, France, this week, but intends playing for at least two more years. While playing for Kia Toa and working as a police constable, the Hurricanes Super Rugby Aupiki fullback gets regular summons to referee at world sevens tournaments, as she did last year at the Tokyo Olympics. Her ambition is to play 100 games for the Manawatu¯ Cyclones. She already holds 10 of the 12 individual records for them, including most appearances (90) and estimates the ton will take her two more seasons.
