What’s new to watch this week

– James Croot

Obi-Wan Kenobi (May 27, Disney+)

Ewan McGregor returns to the Jedi robes for the first time in 17 years, in this six-part Star Wars series which begins a decade after the dramatic events of Revenge of the Sith. That was where Obi-Wan suffered his greatest defeat – the downfall and corruption of his best friend and apprentice Anakin Skywalker. Hayden Christensen is back as Anakin’s alter ego Darth Vader, while the acting ensemble also includes Joel Edgerton, Rupert Friend, Kumail Nanjiani and Kiwi Simone Kessell.

Emergency (May 27, Amazon Prime Video)

Deservedly taking home a prize for its screenplay at January’s Sundance Film Festival, director Carey Williams’ feature-length version of his 2018 awardwinning short of the same name is a crowd-pleasing comedic thriller set over the course of one night. Evoking memories of Superbad and Booksmart, it follows the misadventures of two African American students as they attempt to become the first Black men on their campus to complete a legendary seven-party tour.

Help (8.30pm, May 28, Rialto Channel)

Jodie Comer and Stephen Graham team up for this drama about a woman who appears to have finally found her calling via a job in a Liverpool care home. However, her special talent for connecting with the residents will be put to the test when Covid arrives at their door. It will also be able to stream on Sky Go. ‘‘It is rare that a TV drama manages to be agonising and compelling; unbearable yet utterly immersive,’’ wrote The Times’ Carol Midgley.
