Q&A Gerhard Zitzenbacher

Lone Star’s group executive chef/procurement manager

Where is one place you would take every visitor to New Zealand, and why?

It would have to be Punakaiki on the West Coast. It is an absolutely breathtaking place in summer, and an even better experience on a stormy winter’s day.

The West Coast is a wonderful place to take visitors for a taste of New Zealand.

What is your secret backyard favourite spot?

Waipu¯ Cove – the beach is absolutely amazing. If you manage to get there, the cool cafe opposite the campground serves fabulous food and coffee.

It is a beautiful place for walks, to enjoy the view and relax with your nearest and dearest.

What is your favourite place for a pie/coffee?

Hands down, my favourite pies is from The Baker in Tı¯rau.

If you manage to nail your timing and arrive when

they are fresh out the oven, you will be in pie heaven. The sweet treats are fantastic too.

I have found you can never go wrong with a coffee from Joe’s Garage. I will always make a special visit if I am near one, whenever I am travelling around the country. Also, Poppi Cafe in Newmarket is well worth popping into for a good caffeine fix.

What is one New Zealand spot that is at the top of your bucket list?

It would have to be Stewart Island. It looks stunning and the seafood looks fantastic. It would be a rather peaceful place to recharge my batteries for a couple of days. I would really enjoy the remoteness and tranquillity.
