Q&A Jo Lloyd

Where is one place you would take every visitor to New Zealand, and why?

Being based in Hawke’s Bay, I would say here. The climate and outdoor activities are amazing, the scenery is gorgeous and, with all the incredible wineries, restaurants and a vibrant arts, culture and events, there is so much to do, year-round.

What is your secret backyard favourite spot?

Teresa bar in Napier. It is a fabulous speakeasy hidden through a door at the back of Harvest Deli, corun by Sarah Mitchell and Andreas Marseglia (formerly of Madame George on Auckland’s K Rd, who have won many hospitality awards).

It is the perfect spot for a pre- or post-dinner drink in a snug space, making the best cocktails, with a bit of magic thrown in.

What is your favourite place for a pie/coffee?

The best place to grab a coffee is at the Hawke’s Bay Farmers’ Market at the A&P Showgrounds in Hastings. It happens every Sunday, and it is great wandering around the artisan stalls under a canopy of giant oak trees.

I am not a pie person, so do dumplings count? Milk & Honey, near the beach in Ahuriri, serves perfectly plump steamed dumplings for lunch and dinner. The breakfasts there are also superb.

Where is one New Zealand spot that is at the top of your bucket list?

Doing the Ultimate in Paradise tour in Glenorchy is top of the list at the moment – heli-hiking, amazing adventures and private chefs at the end of each day in a luxury lodge. Sounds like heaven.

Staying safe:

New Zealand is under Covid-19 restrictions. Follow the instructions at covid19.govt.nz.
