TOITŪ TE KUPU
THIS WEEK TE HĀMUA NIKORA SHARES A WORD THAT’S OFF CENTRE.
TĪTAHA… SLIGHTLY TO THE SIDE
There’s a word that rings clear in my ears for a couple of reasons.
The first reason is the way the ori art teacher at high school “nicely” told me I’d probably be better off concentrating on kupu rather than toi (art) when it came to te ao ori “ood effort e tama but it’s a bit t taha for a walking stick”.
I was trying to make a taiaha!
Then there’s the haka command that requires us to throw our hands out from our chests “slightly to the side” come back for a then repeat until told to do something else.
s the hands go out the right foot comes forward and the hip rocks out then back in line as the hands slap the chest.
“Torona t taha” each out slightly to the side.
