YELLOW EYES

WHAT IT MAY MEAN: Liver, gallbladder or pancreas problems

Yellow eyes are a sign of jaundice. The part of your blood that carries oxygen – the haemoglobin – is broken down into a yellow substance called bilirubin. Jaundice occurs when bilirubin isn’t properly excreted from the body. “This is supposed to move from the liver to bile ducts, but when it isn’t cleared from the body it causes yellowing of the eyes and skin,” Edmonds says. It is common, but usually harmless, in newborn babies, but more serious in adults, where it can be a sign of gallstones, pancreatitis and hepatitis.

WHAT TO DO: Since this could signify a serious illness you should book in with your GP for further investigation immediately.
