Heritage home burns
A heritage two-storey homestead in the Christchurch suburb of Riccarton has been destroyed by fire. Owner Hak Hung Wong said he bought the 15-bedroom large heritage villa about a year ago. He had hoped to turn it into a family home but the property had been unoccupied for about 20 years and the renovation bill was an estimated $3.5 million. He hoped some original features could be salvaged. A Christchurch City Council heritage assessment says the bay villa was built around 1903 and was significant for its craftsmanship and extravagant decorative detail.
