Airport bad for wild birds

Berlin’s newest airport is killing wild birds from kingfishers to kestrels because of the lights shining out of its vast windows at night, German conservation groups say. Six groups have called for the main terminal at Willy Brandt Airport to be refitted. The groups, including Friends of the Earth, said they were constantly receiving reports of dead or seriously injured birds. ‘‘Birds don’t recognise transparent glass as an obstacle, and can’t recognise reflections of the surroundings for what they are,’’ they said. The airport said it had taken measures to prevent bird deaths, and had counted only 40 this year.
