Council has lost the plot

If any further evidence was required that Wellington City Council has finally lost the plot, we now have it.

As a city we are struggling to fund urgent infrastructure, yet the council thinks that spending somewhere between $52 million-$79m on making the Golden Mile vehicle free is a good use of ratepayer money (Decisions shape city’s future, June 17).

This absurd idea, according to a spokesperson from Let’s Get Wellington Moving has ‘‘. . . very little risk of any downside to retailers’’, although there is no explanation as to the rationale for this statement.

Irrespective of whether there will be no downside, this extravagant spending should be way down the list of spending priorities.
