Super-sized stunner in Te Aro

A stunning waterside residence that feels more like a family home than an inner-city apartment is for sale for the first time.

The Te Aro showcase of light and space, at 4D/42 Cable St, is on the third and fourth levels of the Portal complex overlooking the inner harbour and Te Papa.

When the vendors bought off the plans in 2007, they combined two units into one.

‘‘We were moving from a big home and didn’t want to compromise on space or storage,’’ Jenny says.

‘‘And now we’re ready to downsize because our children have left home.’’

But such is the versatility of the 235-square metre floor plan that a new owner could enjoy spacious single-level living on the upper level, with three bedrooms and two bathrooms, while keeping the downstairs bedroom suite for guests.

The apartment, which comes with two secure car parks, faces north for amazing sun and waterfront views while offering all the conveniences of its innercity location.

‘‘We’ve loved living here because we’re just 10 minutes’ walk from the CBD one way, 10 minutes’ walk from Oriental Bay the other way, and just metres from the waterfront,’’ Jenny says.

‘‘I have an office in the CBD but mostly work from home because it’s so handy to everything.’’

Anita Fijn co-ordinated the interiors but Jenny specified the design of the kitchen herself.

‘‘It has everything I’ve always wanted in a kitchen,’’ she says. ‘‘Top-quality Miele appliances and Italian tapware, Zenith instant boiling and filtered water tap, a lot of cupboard and drawer space, and plinth drawers that otherwise would be wasted space.’’

One of these toe-level drawers even conceals a fold-up stepladder.

There’s also a large scullery, with an engineered stone bench with granite composite sink, storage space, and space for both a wine fridge and separate beverages fridge, while the kitchen’s engineered stone benchtops with a waterfall finish, island sink and tiled splashback were renewed this year.

The kitchen is open-plan with the living/dining room, which opens to a covered deck, as does the adjacent media/formal living room.

Both living areas have Bose wall speakers while the main bedroom suite on the lower level has in-ceiling Bose speakers, a Juliet balcony, a large walk-in wardrobe and a luxuriously bespoke ensuite with a shower with Hansgrohe shower head and body jets, dual-basin vanity and toilet.

Another bedroom with its own ensuite on the upper level could be an alternative main bedroom suite.

The third double-bedroom has a wall of built-in storage cupboards and city views that stretch up to the Brooklyn wind turbine while the fourth looks west towards Kelburn.

Other features include a separate laundry, in-ceiling heat pumps, underfloor heating in two of the bathrooms, walk-in linen cupboard, two hot water heaters, large shoe cupboard, and balcony louvres for privacy and shade.

‘‘It’s rare to find a 235-square metre apartment so close to both the CBD and entertainment district,’’ Ben Atwill, of Team Atwill – Ray White, says. ‘‘You can walk everywhere.

‘‘It also has a wonderful connection to the waterfront with a harbour view that’s dynamic rather than just static – there’s always something different to see.

‘‘This really is a home in an apartment format. It has a huge amount of room, separate bedroom wings, the bonus of a separate laundry and scullery, and it’s virtually on the waterfront in the hub of the city.’’
