Plane’s engine smokes on Wellington runway

An Air New Zealand flight from Christchurch was seen with smoke coming from one of its engines on the runway of Wellington Airport yesterday afternoon. Spokesperson for Wellington Airport, Jenna Raeburn, said there were no injuries in the incident which happened shortly after the plane landed about 2pm. Raeburn confirmed the plane involved was an ATR-72 twin-engine turboprop. She said there were no delays as a result of the issue. An Air New Zealand spokesperson said the plane landed without issue but one of the engines emitted smoke during shutdown. ‘‘Flight crew determined it was safe to continue to taxi and by the time the plane got to the gate the smoke had dispersed,’’ the spokesperson said. Airport fire services were called by the flight deck as a precaution. Engineers were inspecting the aircraft.
