Italians set sail for another Cup bid

Luna Rossa are returning for another crack at the Auld Mug after confirming their registration for the next America’s Cup.

Skipper Max Sirena made the announcement during the launch of the Italian syndicate’s book, Luna Rossa – The unforgettable challenge, in Milan.

‘‘We have sent the ‘notice of challenge’, which includes the dossier with the documentation necessary to formalise registration for the event,’’ Sirena was quoted as saying in multiple Italian news outlets.

The announcement comes following news this week that former holders Alinghi are set to return to the regatta, while American Magic have also signalled their intention to continue.

With Sir Ben Ainslie’s INEOS Team UK already locked in as the Challenger of Record, it’s a hugely positive start after the entry period for the 37th America’s Cup opened on Wednesday, despite the continued uncertainty surrounding the venue.

Cork in Ireland, Jeddah in Saudi Arabia and a multi-city bid from Spain are in the running alongside Auckland’s fading hopes, with a decision to be made by March 31.

Luna Rossa, who are backed by the Circolo della Vela Sicilia yacht club, were the Challenger of Record for this year’s America’s Cup in Auckland, but were replaced by INEOS for the 2024 event.

Led by their unique dual helmsmen configuration of Jimmy Spithill and Francesco Bruni, Luna Rossa won the 2021 Prada Cup for the right to challenge Team New Zealand for the Auld Mug.

They took the fight to the Kiwis, winning a point on each of the first three days to level the series at 3-3 before Team New Zealand pulled away to successfully defend the America’s Cup 7-3.

It appears that has only left the Italians even more determined to get their hands on the trophy.

America’s Cup organisers have been approached for comment but earlier this week Team New Zealand said it was up to the individual teams to announce their intentions publicly.

‘‘The Defender [RNZYS & Team New Zealand] have had very positive initial interest and already received a number of entries,’’ Team NZ told Stuff.

Teams have until July 31 next year to enter, though late entries will be accepted up until May 31, 2023 – at an added cost.
