New-look Astoria

Back on menu

A well-known cafe that shocked Wellington foodies when it closed suddenly 18 months ago has reopened with a new look and menu.

Astoria in Midland Park, originally opened in 1996, was one of the capital’s oldest cafes and a top spot to see and be seen. Its proximity to Parliament, law courts and its nearly 150-seat capacity made it a regular spot for networking and schmooze.

In 2013, a young Labour backbencher, Jacinda Ardern, was photographed there, commiserating with Grant Robertson after his unsuccessful Labour leadership bid. Former National leader Don Brash was a regular sight at his favourite table circa 2011.

Now, the cafe is open again after a complete rebuild of the venue’s interior and kitchen.

James Pask, executive chef for owners Yu-group, said he was ‘‘very, very happy’’ to be open again after the pandemic caused delays to the opening date.

‘‘We’ve had a few hiccups along the way.’’

The room’s decor has been taken right back to the concrete with low lighting, a range of seating and a 13-metre bar, crowned by a bespoke hanging wooden truss, as the focal point of the room.

The menu has also been revitalised with an emphasis on New York deli and Italian food ‘‘with our own spin on it’’.
