Coll wins, King loses

New Zealand’s leading players had a mixed day at the world championships in Egypt with Paul Coll cruising into the quarterfinals but Joelle King suffering an upset loss yesterday. World No 5 King lost to 15th ranked Egyptian Nada Abbas in Cairo 7-11 13-15 11-8 6-11 with their third-round match. King was troubled by injury in the early stages but battled back before the younger Abbas fed off her home support to score a notable victory. Coll had his own injury issues – the match was halted briefly in the third game as he cut a knee – but was otherwise untroubled for an 11-5, 11-0, 11-6 victory over Egypt’s Mazen Hesham in 38 minutes.
