Stabbing victim in serious condition

A person is in a serious but stable condition after a stabbing on Lambton Quay in central Wellington on Thursday night. Police arrested a 23-year-old man after the incident near the Countdown supermarket, which happened just before 8pm. The supermarket was closed for nearly an hour and police cordoned off an area outside the store. Blood could be seen to the left of Cable Car Lane and on a nappy in the doorway of a neighbouring shop. A Countdown spokesperson confirmed the incident happened outside the store and no staff were directly involved. The supermarket closed early on Thursday night but reopened ‘‘at the usual time’’ yesterday. The spokesperson said their ‘‘thoughts are with the victim and their loved ones’’ and requested privacy while staff ‘‘process what has happened’’. Staff were being offered counselling support. The alleged offender has been charged with wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm and two charges of assault. He has been remanded for a week in custody and granted interim name suppression. ‘‘We understand this incident is unsettling for the community and can reassure the public that police will respond and hold offenders accountable for their actions,’’ police said on Thursday night.
