Blow to the arts
The decision of Creative New Zealand to stop core funding for Arts On Tour NZ is a poor one.
For over two decades, Arts On Tour NZ has been a lifeline, delivering high-quality performers to places not reached regularly by other arts organisations.
What is particularly regrettable is the harm this will do to a network that has been built up over those years, comprising small arts organisations, often operating on little funding, that have been working with Arts on Tour NZ to bring these performers to their communities at a price that they and their supporters can afford.
Such networks take time and trust to build. That hard work has
been done and it should not be thrown away.
When I worked for the Hastings Community Arts Council, I used Arts On Tour NZ many times. Without it, our community would have had far less access to the excitement that great art brings.
I urge Creative New Zealand to reconsider.
