Put some colour in our lives

I read Sculpture backers stand ground (May 30), about the proposed rata sculpture, with great sadness. The council has declined a community initiative that is supported by tangata whenua and for which it is not being asked for anything other than permission.

I fly in and out of Wellington regularly and while I like the current ‘Wellington’ sign, its colourlessness unfairly reinforces Wellington as a city of grey bureaucrats.

On the other hand, my impression of Wellington on my first visit to the city, in December 1981, was of a sea of vibrant red pōhutukawa flowers on Cobham Drive and in Karori’s Appleton Park.

Can’t we, for once, put aside our political and cultural correctness and have a little colour in our lives? It would be uplifting and a fitting reflection of our vibrant city.
