Truckload of glue on road

Emma Clark-Dow

Traffic was left bumper to bumper along Auckland’s SH20 yesterday as council services worked to clear 22 tonnes of sticky carpet glue from the road.

About 8am, a truck carrying carpet glue crashed in Roscommon Rd, near the Cavendish Drive offramp in Wiri. It flipped on its side, spilling its contents all over the road. At 4.40pm, Waka Kotahi NZTA reopened the Cavendish Drive southbound off-ramp to traffic. Cavendish Drive was also fully open. Council proactive compliance manager Adrian Wilson said council officers were determining if there had been any impacts on the stormwater network.

Earlier in the morning, a Stuff reporter at the scene said carpet glue could be seen dripping on to the road. Fire and Emergency confirmed there were no injuries.

A woman in the carpet industry said carpet glue was a toxic substance, although it was safe with adequate ventilation.
