Reti would have been a better choice to lead National

That shiny Christopher Luxon should be parachuted in to lead the National Party is a democratic travesty. A man with wealth sufficient to sink several battleships, too many expensive homes to remember their precise locations, can hardly be thought to be a “man of the people”, or friend of “the man and woman in the street”. Has he a clue how “the other half lives”? It seems most unlikely.

Shane Reti may not be a star in the firmament but he offers downto-earth leadership, of which the National Party, just at the moment, could do with a strong dose. Dr Reti is a highly qualified professional from several spheres, medicine and accounting being but two. He is also Ma¯ ori and in close touch with every facet of Ma¯ oridom. One way and another, therefore, he is custom-built to lead the National Party now and possibly onto the Treasury benches in 2023.

The National Party will live to regret falling for the superficial charm of ephemeral Christoper Luxon.
