Speed limits

Several letters in The Press this week relate to lower speed limits which are being rolled out all over the road network by Waka Kotahi/ NZTA.

I can relate to frustration when following a slow driver (and there are many), but in the main I have found that drive times are approximately 5-10 minutes longer over distances of 120 to 150 kilometres.

Chris R Davies, in his letter, claims it adds 20 minutes to a journey from Blenheim to Nelson. We did a longer journey, from Nelson to Picton (about 20km further) last week, door to door, 132km. It took five minutes longer in good driving conditions. I would say 10 minutes longer in heavy traffic or adverse conditions.

There has been considerable over-reaction to this particular route change, but we noticed that drivers were generally keeping to the limits and traffic flow was good. Phil Hunt, Picton
