Hong Kong students quitting

The number of students dropping out of secondary school in Hong Kong has risen by 65 per cent, with the majority emigrating with their families as a result of China’s draconian national security laws. Schools lost

4460 students and nearly 1000 teachers during the

2020-21 academic year, according to a survey released by the Hong Kong Association of the Heads of Secondary Schools and the Hong Kong Centre for International Student Assessment. About 60 per cent of the students said they planned to leave Hong Kong. The number of teachers leaving has nearly doubled from the previous year. Beijing has ordered the city’s education officials to revamp the curriculum so that pupils learn the repressive national security law and respect the rule of the Chinese Communist Party.
