Body of drowning victim found 100km away

Police have confirmed a body found at Cape Foulwind has been identified as Mikhail Buchanan, who went missing at Maruia Falls, in the

Tasman region. The

26-year-old drowned after he jumped into treacherous water with his cousin Jona on June

24. His body was found more than 100 kilometres downstream at Cape Foulwind, near Westport, at 4.30pm on Sunday. Police and locals spent many days searching for Buchanan after he disappeared but were unsuccessful. Created by the 1929 Murchison earthquake, Maruia Falls is an 11m waterfall and is considered treacherous. Several people have drowned there in the past decade.
