The price to be paid

(Power supplies tight, August 12) while billions of unharnessed potential megawatts flow out to sea every day from Canterbury’s major rivers. The price of four decades of neglect and theory-driven governance? Ridiculous!

The cost to NZ Inc of the ‘‘Bradford model’’ [which deregulated the power market in 1997] to the economy has been a growing disaster for which the bill is still to be paid.

Any wonder the country is going into an exodus mode.

John McCaskey, Waipara [abridged]
