Civic Theatre becomes a literary bazaar

Southland reporter

There’s nothing dog-eared about the Invercargill Rotary Club’s book sale.

The annual event, now in its 42nd year, starts today and tables at the city’s Civic Theatre will be groaning under the weight of more than 50,000 books, vinyl, CDs, DVDs and cassettes.

To date, the sale has contributed more than $1 million in proceeds to the community and this year the proceeds will go to Youthline Southland. This reflects an emphasis on the benefits staying local, sale committee chairperson Richard Russell said.

The number of audio-visual items was the most he’d seen, and the array of children’s books was evidence that kids were still reading, in spite of what some politicians might have us think, he said.
