Record catch possibility

A sockeye salmon caught near the Lake Ruataniwha/Ohau B canal outlet could be a world record sports fish catch. Rhys Adams, a Central South Island Fish and Game officer, said Geoff Clarke initially thought his 7.93 kilogram (17.5 pounds) catch was a rainbow trout because of its dark back colouration. ‘‘After sharing a photo of his catch on social media, he received messages informing him of the identity of his fish and that it could be a world record,’’ Adams said. The all-tackle world record, according to Adams, is 6.88kg (15lb 3 ounces) caught in 1987 by Stan Roach in Alaska.
