Waste plant

Peter Vendetti (The Timaru Herald, May 21) replied to my letter, of May 14, about supporting a 100% clean environmental wasteto-energy plant.

The point is what are we going to do with our rubbish? At the moment we put it in the ground and contaminate the groundwater and a possibility of being flooded and washed away by rising seawater (Timaru dump) in the near future; example a West Coast river dump a couple of years ago.

Looking at the options, a wasteto-energy plant is one of the best solutions we have at this moment, but build it with the environment in mind with today’s technology.

As said before, we have to do something in New Zealand because we can’t send our rubbish overseas anymore and putting it in the ground is not a great solution. This waste-to-energy plant will be one of many in New Zealand, what we need is a prototype plant.

This should be driven by the Government, not a small town council, because they don’t have the resources and should not be at the cost of Waimate ratepayers. This is a national issue.

Let’s wait till we have all the facts from South Island Recovery Ltd. This is our generation’s problem, let’s get this sorted by being positive and find a way forward by being part of it before things are signed off. Ask the questions and make sure councils and the Government are doing their job 100% for the community.

I am sorry Mr Taylor but as soon as I started reading your reply to my letter (May 21) about your proposed incineration plant my eyes started to glaze over.

It is time to stop trotting out trite statements prepared by your expensive spin doctors and answer the questions raised in my letter and the many other concerns in the community regarding this plant.

How about providing some facts about the supposedly world-leading innovative technology, secure renewable power supply and job creation? We have heard it all before and frankly it is time you and your company provided some real fact based answers.

You could save you and your company a lot of expense and anguish if you just accepted the fact that your proposed incineration plant is neither wanted nor welcome here in South Canterbury. Cut your losses and move on.
