Sculpture of a tranquil state

- David McBride

Usually free of political dogma, the world of art offers a triumph of human spirit over everyday life. A brief encounter can provide a lift to one’s day.

Many great sculptors have described their motivation in releasing a subject from its rock hard material.

On this occasion the brilliant New Zealand sculptor Llew Summers released the sleeping yet smiling Tranquillity figure, positioned upon the Timaru Public Library triangle. A small cluster of local citizens provided the energy and the funds for this enhancement.

Children may choose to clamber over her; adults may be inspired; all may be touched by this very tactile work. The human figures preferred by Summers are often robust, unlikely to quickly wear away.

Tranquillity has silent messages apparent, conveyed by the sculptor’s skill: be kind, be resilient, do smile, be thoughtful, but furthermore – please do not disturb me with your troubles!
