Endurance speedskating winners decided after nine rounds

The leading competitors have all confirmed their top form in the ninth and final round of the Southern Endurance speed skating series at Timaru’s bank track at the weekend.

Derek Tan (Winton) and Shannell Wooding took out the senior 50km Begg Classic events with Brayden Teague and Lauren Crawford (Cave) winning the junior 25km events and the 5km novice/ primary races going to Oceania Purukamu and Oakley Mattingley.

Those victories confirm the six as winners of the overall endurance competition with points awarded for their best six results in the nine events.

Wooding produced a top effort to foot it with the men, crossing in one hour 49.32 minutes, after Tan had been successful in shaking off the men, but not Wooding. Issy Stock, a young formerTimaru skater, put in a top performance for second in the women.

Daryl Mattingley’s consistency was apparent with another second in the men’s while sprinter Ricky Purukamu was third.

Teague, the top junior (under 15) finished the 25km with the senior group in 57.19 while there was also a strong effort from Tom Crawford (Cave) and Zachary Tang who surprised in finishing third.

Lauren Crawford (Cave) produced another consistent effort to win the junior under 15 girls event from Georgia Kortright second. Kortight and her younger sister Sophie were the only competitors to contest all the series races in the younger grades. Gemma Thornley and Jessica Box were third equal.

The novice/primary 5km boys went to Oakley Mattingley from Mason Teague and Phoenix Mattingley while in the girls Oceania Purukamu headed off Lilly Rae and Piper Hogenesch.
