Civic choir celebrates

Rowan Miller

In July 1956, the Hamilton Civic Choir celebrated its tenth anniversary with a concert at the Embassy Theatre.

The concert was conducted by J. Battersby and the choir performed A Sea Symphony by R. Vaughan Williams and Requiem by W. A. Mozart, accompanied by the Hamilton Civic Orchestra and the Hamilton String Players.

The programme notes that the choir was formed in 1946 as part of a swell of cultural interest following World War II.

The conductor for this concert, Mr Battersby, was a soloist at the inaugural concert in 1946 and several members listed were original members.
