Thanks for the BBQ response

I want to say a huge thanks to all those who have attended our Common Sense BBQs around the city over the last nine months. The sausage sizzles, at a different park every Saturday and Sunday have proved a great way to connect. I’ve always enjoyed knocking on doors but with Covid-19 I found residents were understandably less comfortable with a stranger turning at their doorstep.

The Common Sense BBQs have been a revelation.

The biggest thing I’ve learnt is how important it is to just shut up and listen. Not an easy thing for a politician to do.

I’ve been moved by the friendly response I’ve received and by the depth of knowledge people have, but above all by the passion they have for their city.

I think our current public submission process is flawed because it tends to attract vocal interest.

groups rather than your everyday Hamiltonian. There’s got to be a better way.

My wife Julie (who does all the work) and I will continue Common Sense BBQs twice a weekend and if I’m elected Mayor in October I intend to get councillors taking turns hosting BBQs every weekend.

Representing the city is not just about pushing your own ideology. It’s about understanding your residents’ views and needs. Above all it’s about listening. Geoff Taylor

Deputy Mayor, Hamilton
