Fire closes stores

Eight fire engines were called to an overnight fire at The Base shopping centre, which forced some stores to close. The Warehouse, a Torpedo 7 store and an adjoining cafe´ were unable to open yesterday. Entry to The Warehouse store was blocked off, and there was noticeable water spillage across the store’s concrete floors and the lingering smell of smoke. Staff at The Warehouse did not want to comment, stating that the fire was ‘‘under investigation’’. About 1am, Police received a report about a fire alarm activation at The Base. They directed further requests for comment to Fire and Emergency (FENZ). FENZ said they responded to the blaze in the early hours of yesterday. ‘‘At 1.05am this morning, Fire and Emergency was alerted to a second alarm building fire in Pukete, Hamilton City,’’ a spokesperson from FENZ said. ‘‘Eight fire trucks and support vehicles attended the incident. The last one left at 4.41am.’’ Due to industrial action, they were unable to provide further detail. Security staff outside The Warehouse directed Stuff to a spokesperson for the shopping centre, who was approached for comment.
