Books, an ideal Christmas gift

Rowan Miller

Asentiment I’m sure many of us can sympathise with: ‘‘Give Books This Christmas.’’ This flier dates from 1935 and comes from Paul’s Book Arcade on Victoria St (opposite the Theatre Royal).

The site, now 211 Victoria St was listed as a Category 1 Heritage Building in 1998 and currently houses Koko Cafe´ .

Paul’s Book Arcade was founded in 1901 and closed in 1972.

The flier contains small reviews of titles available and who they would be suitable for as Christmas gifts.

The recommendations include: ‘‘A Present for a Man – Tschifelly’s Ride’’ and ‘‘Particularly for a Lady – A

Village in a Valley by Beverley Nichols’’.
