How Chanel got his Chtty nickname

SPORTING nicknames often have amusing backstories and Warriors five-eighth Chanel Harris-Tavita – aka Chtty – is no different.

Obviously, Chtty contains the initials of his name, but the playmaker has explained those three letters turned into the name he’s now called throughout the club after he and a bunch of team-mates went out for a takeaway a couple of years ago.

‘‘We were all waiting for our meals and mine had CHT on the top and she brought it out,’’ said Chtty, ahem, sorry, HarrisTavita. ‘‘She was saying ‘Chtty, Chtty’.

‘‘I said to her ‘is that CHT?’

‘‘She said ‘oh yeah, Chtty’.

‘‘Adam Blair was there and as soon as he hears something that could be a nickname, he’ll jump on it. It stuck since then.’’

The Chtty nickname joins the other one he has at the club, which is Channel, purposely pronounced like the English ‘‘channel’’ rather than ‘‘Chanel’’ as in the luxury fashion house. And which one does he prefer?

‘‘I don’t know, the boys call me both, so I’m not bothered.’’
