In praise of Key

Allen Jones’ comments about Sir John Key are about as far from the mark that it is possible to be (Letters, January 15).

‘‘His main aim in life, to my

way of thinking, is to promote himself and add to the family coffers’’.

Key was raised in a state house by a solo parent. Through his own efforts he succeeded in his chosen profession. When he stood for Parliament, he gave up an annual income probably in the millions of dollars. In Opposition and as prime minister he gave the majority of his salary to charities.

It isn’t any surprise that he is a sought-after director of large businesses.

Hardly someone known for having those ‘‘wacky ideas’’ which concern Jones. Mike Brooke, New Plymouth
